Exploring the Unseen: Adventures Off the Beaten Path
I am always looking for my next adventure and experience. Growing up in Northern Arkansas, I spent my youth exploring the outdoors. The Buffalo River, Rush, and Rea Valley, with their winding back roads leading to the Buffalo River, were my favorite spots. These weekend outings, crossing creeks and passing incredible vistas, were the highlights of my childhood.
I lived in Fort Smith for a couple of years, but the COVID crisis put a damper on my usual explorations. This year, I vowed to get out and experience as much as I could during my time off. I'm on a quest for the perfect camping locations, beautiful hikes, backpacking adventures, and rivers to kayak. Now that I'm in beautiful Superior, Wisconsin, I hope to embark on a few two- or three-day floats this summer. Superior, being on the border of Minnesota, offers a multitude of outdoor activities, from hiking and camping to kayaking and more. Recently, we purchased two Hemingway e-bikes, and I’m excited to explore with them. Though I never considered myself a bicycle enthusiast, I've found a newfound enjoyment in it.
Superior, Wisconsin, and the surrounding areas are a treasure trove of outdoor adventures. Some of the spots I’m looking forward to exploring include the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore for kayaking and the Superior Hiking Trail for some breathtaking hikes. If you have any favorite spots or hidden gems in this area, I’d love to hear about them!
I dream of waking up, having a couple of cups of coffee, and hitting the road with no set destination. I love taking side roads, county roads, and off-the-beaten-path highways, always on the lookout for surprises. Old structures, especially barns and homesteads, abandoned bridges, gas stations, and old trucks in fields, are some of my favorite subjects to photograph. You can experience more of “America” by slowing down and venturing off the interstates and freeways.
I've been guilty of having my nose in my smartphone, missing out on the unique and beautiful surroundings around me. I’m making a conscious effort to always have my camera with me. Too often, I’ve regretted leaving it behind, only to come across something perfect to photograph. Now, my overly stuffed camera bag is a constant companion in my Jeep.
For example, one afternoon, while driving to my parents' house, I crossed some railroad tracks as usual but noticed some old tractors and equipment. Maybe it was the way the light hit them, or maybe I just really saw them for the first time. I stopped and took a few pictures with my iPhone 13 Pro Max and was pleased with how they turned out. Similarly, my daughter pointed out four turtles on a log I’d passed countless times without noticing. It’s moments like these that remind me to always have my camera ready. You never know what you’ll find or where you’ll see it, so always be prepared. Remember, on a road trip, half the fun is getting there and experiencing the journey.
Here are a few of my favorite photographs from recent adventures. Each one tells a story and reminds me of the beauty that surrounds us if we only take the time to notice.

Although I’ve never considered myself artistic, I make a conscious effort to see the world differently. My daughter has an amazing perspective and sees things I often miss. Being aware of my shortcomings and striving to improve is essential. It’s important to live in the moment and be open to the next adventure. We only live once, and we should make the most of every day, finding pleasure in small things and embracing each moment.
I’ve never been one for routine, preferring each day to be unique and exciting. My girlfriend shares this philosophy. As a travel nurse who worked in COVID wings during the pandemic, she fought for her life after contracting the virus and being placed in an induced coma for over a month. Her incredible recovery has inspired me in countless ways, showing me the value of living in the moment and making the most of our time. This is one reason I love photography so much; it captures moments in time forever.
I’m planning several adventures in the coming months, including a kayak trip through the Apostle Islands and a bike ride along the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. I’m also excited about exploring more of Minnesota’s North Shore. If you have any recommendations for must-see spots or hidden gems, please share them in the comments!
One of my favorite quotes encapsulates this philosophy:
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a Ride!'” – Hunter S. Thompson
